The thing, which I have understood during the first year of my study when I was almost expelled from the educational institution, is that one should make all the tasks in time. It seems that there is no any necessity to start writing your course paper right now that you have the whole term in reserve, however this term passes so quickly, and you are always trapped by the lack of the time.
However, if you will divide all the job you have to do during the whole year into the equal parts, and you will do it in time, you will never be snowed under with work. It is much more convenient to make some part of the assignments each day, than before the examinations not to sleep during the nights trying to study the material.
The second thing you should remember is that it is better not to miss the classes. When you are present during all the classes, you are automatically remembering the information, which may be very useful for you during the tests and examinations. All you have to do before the examination is to revise, and you know; it is simpler to revise the material than to learn it form the very beginning.
